Running 2.23 Miles

Yesterday runners logged 2.23 miles for Ahmaud Arbery who was shot and killed on February 23. He was unarmed and his murder has pulled together the running community to shed some light on this tragedy. He was 25 years old when he was killed and May 8, 2020 would have been his 26th birthday. I had no physical connection to him but I saw the video of his killing and it makes me ill. I decided to travel my 2.23 miles carrying a 25 pound weight as an additional reminder of why this run was happening. I was slow, walked at times and struggled securing this plate in my arms. My heart rate was really high and my arms burned but I knew my struggle was temporary.

I saw dozens of images of friends out running and posting pics of their Garmin, Apple Watch or a Strava screenshot. I applaud you all for being a part of this. I hope we don’t need to do more of these runs to put a spotlight on tragedy like this, however if we do I’ll lace them up again.
